Last year we did a poetry digital camera project with our 2nd year English class. They read some poems. Storyboarded them and used the digital camera and internet to put images together in movie maker to represent the poem. They added background music and text as well.. it worked very well. Accelerated reader is being continued with our 3rd year JCSP students and has made a massive difference to these students attitude to reading. We do DEAR with the whole school every January and it always goes down well.

I have found the 'Flip for Comprehension' book very useful for developing comprehension strategies with students. It can be purchased through educational suppliers e.g. Carroll Education or through Amazon.

Any alternative to the JCSP folders? They demand that other teachers will provide handouts, certs, revision sheets and class tests but what happens if you are the only teacher filing notes away for the students? Doesn't that defeat the point?

Just finished running Drop Everything and Read with all first years classes. We decided not to just to run it with our JCSP class but include all first years so the JCSP students feel part of a group that are all focusing on reading.
We just the initiative money to buy ten books for each first year class depending on their ability and interests. Hence 40 books were bought in total which we can now add to our reading corner. We didn't buy more than ten books per class because we wanted to encourage students to bring in material that they wanted to read i.e. The Echo, Match etc and after the first few days, that's what eventually happened. We also tied the initiative in with the MS Readathon to create a bit of competition to the project. There were prizes for the class who raised the most and those who read the best. Our honours class raised the most money but our JCSP class won the title of silent readers who always brought in their own books.
All in all, it takes a bit of organisation but it makes a huge impact on the school.

Email resources you have made/gained so that they can be made available to teams across the country. If we share our hard work, we will gain lots of new ideas, etc. If you have any pictures or videos of your initiatives, please upload them. It is our intention to create a link on our site that teachers can access to download resources that they need.

Are there any suggestions as to the best way you would like to see this link developed on the website?

As the national census is current at the moment I accessed the national census archives and found a whole lesson devoted to researching the census. It is a very good IT lesson for use with either first or third years. I hope somebody finds this useful.
